The world of traditional publishing hinges on finding a literary agent who can land you a book contract. And finding that agent depends on one thing: a well-crafted query letter.

Writing an effective query may seem more mysterious than writing an entire book. How do you start? What information are agents looking for? How do you sell yourself and your story in a few short paragraphs?

In this class, literary agent Laura Mazer will unlock the secrets so you'll have the confidence to write a query letter that sizzles and sells.

Here’s how the program will unfold.

Laura will convey best practices in writing a query letter, share examples and walk through the essential elements, paragraph by paragraph. She'll also answer your questions, including...

  • What are the most common mistakes authors make in query letters?

  • Are query letters different for fiction vs. nonfiction?

  • What do you say in your opening sentence?

  • How do you convey what your book is about without giving away the whole thing and keeping it to a paragraph summary?

  • What kind of personal and professional credits should you include?

  • Do you need to include information about your social media platform?

  • How can you personalize your letter for each agent you approach?

  • What do you say in the subject line?

  • How long should the query be?
